During my Prenatal/Postnatal yoga teacher training in San Francisco, my teacher Jane Austin, closed a lot of our classes and sessions with a call and response chant. We chanted the Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1:36
vishoka va jyotismati
विशोका वा ज्योतिष्मती ॥३६॥
Jane explained this Sutra as how to find the light that lives inside of you (and when you’re pregnant there are two lights!) She also said that ‘this light can be fed by the breath’ and ‘the light knows that sorrow can dissipate.’
It resonated so much with one of her prenatal students that her student gave her new-born baby the middle name ‘Jyotish‘ which means ‘inner light.’
It is beautiful and easy to chant, so when I get home, if you’re in my class, get ready to chant for your inner light.
